How And When Do You Dig Up Tulip Trees About 3 Feet Tall? I Have One Growing In My Yard.?

I am an experienced landscaper and can tell you that a 6′ root ball for a 3′ tall tree is MAJOR OVERKILL. There wouldn’t be many if any roots at all out that far so you would be just moving dirt for the most part. A tree this size could be successfully transplanted with a root ball about a third that size. A root ball with a diameter of 2′ would be more than sufficient. When you re-plant the tree make sure not to plant it any deeper that is was before you dug it up. If you do plant too deep it will surely die. The best time to transplant would be in the late summer or early fall after the weather cools a bit.

If you want to transplant it you will want to dig it up about three ft from the trunk so you will have a nice root ball for it to get re-established, if you just want to remove it dig it up closer to the trunk. If replanting water well until it gets re-established and add fertilizer to the new dug hole and mix with some of the soil before planting.
